…our individual lives, all relationships, and the world would be magnificent beyond anything we’ve so far imagined or believed could be possible. High and deserved praise for this book.

I read this book a few years ago and refer to it time and again to not only remind myself but also to share with friends regarding their relationships. This book is like having multiple books in one. I’d like to write some highlights for you, but the entire book is a highlight. Some samplings, however, of this great book…

"Here are the words of an adult: "Even though you please me sexually, even though we have been together so long, even though I don’t know whether I will ever find somone else, I have to let you go because you do not meet me at my soul/adult level." "Here are the words of a codependent: "Because you please me sexually, because we have been together so long, because I don’t know whether I will ever find someone else, I can’t let you go– even though you do not meet me at my soul/adult level."

"As adolescents, we were taught that the way to tell we are in love is by our loss of control, our loss of will, and a compelling sense that we could not have done otherwise. This falling in love contrasts with the reality of rising in love with conscious choice, sane fondness, intact boundaries, and ruthless clarity." Referring to the former, Richo adds, "…that kind of reaction is actually a signal from the needy child within, telling us what we need to work on, not directing us to our rescuer."

"Love can be confused with clinging that is welcomed by the other, sexual desire that is satisfied by the other, or neediness that is fulfilled by the other.

Dr. Yalom is a good writer and offers a unique perspective here on his decades of work in psychotherapy. It’s definitely thought-provoking reading, and very easy to follow.

But it left me with questions for the author (and some serious reservations)–never a good feeling at the end of a book.

On the one hand, I appreciate that his training was to remain distant from patients where, as he described it, even helping an elderly woman put on a coat would be frowned on. I appreciate that, through experience with real-life patients, he realized the importance of establishing warmth, an interpersonal connection, a -human- relationship with patients rather than a distant "psychiatrist-as-remote-God-like" figure.

However, reading many of the chapters here, I couldn’t help but think some of the therapy methods he describes could be too intimate and too seductive with his patients. I kept feeling that it would be very easy to act like this and wind up crossing the line–or being misunderstood–in a therapy setting. Sexual attraction (and, as he says, even unconsummated love that is mutually felt) is a recurrent theme in so many stories he shares from his practice.

There seemed to me to be much too much emphasis on talking about the therapist-patient relationship each week. Dr. Yalom writes, over and over, that he realizes he is far more important to his patients, personally, than they are to him. And yet he also seemed to intentionally intensify their feelings for him in the course of therapy, giving example after example of how he pushed them to share dreams about him, fantasies about him, etc.

This textbook, aimed at the advanced undergraduate and graduate biology and medical students covers the basic biology of cancer at the molecular andcellular level. Research into cancer in many different directions has been continuing at an accelerated pace since about World War II. In 1975 a major breakthrough was made by H.E. Varmus and J.M. Bishop on San Francisco. The result has been the creation of the new branch of biology covered by this book.

The amount of information discovered in the three decades since then has given us an immense database on the root causes of cancer. The basic discovery that cancer is not one disease but many, some 110 at last count, has led to vast amounts of data.

This book begins to lay out the underlying laws and principles that are beginning to emerge from that data. At the same time, this book is written as a recruiting pamphlet to attract new generations of researchers to move the science forward. While the book points out the discoveries that have been made, it also points out areas where questions remain.

At 850 pages, this is a large book, covering an immense amount of material. In addition there is a CD-ROM with even more material. It has figures, tables, micrographs loaded into Powerpoint presentations that cover each chapter which provides an excellent study aid. There are mini-lectures on various subjects. There are also several movies that will aid in the understanding of some of the processes involved.

A poster ‘The Pathways of Human Cancer’ summarizes many of the signaling pathways implicated in tumor development. This poster has been produced by Cell Signaling Technology.

The rate of development in the field means that this book will need a new edition shortly, but for the moment this represents the state of the art as it is known today.

As a colorectal cancer survivor, I’ve undertaken a self-study of my cancer in particular, and the disease in general. Saltz’s Colorectal Cancer is the comprehensive text for me, but it is better read with a foundation in the nuts and bolts of the disease. Sompayrac’s How Cancer Works is a wonderful text for explaining what the nuts and bolts are, but this book, Biology of Cancer, not only explains these in better detail, it also explains how researchers figured all this out. The illustrations, graphs and photos are worth the price of the book itself–you can see the discoveries unfold in front of your own eyes. You don’t have to be a scientist to start reading it, but you will probably have to become something of a scientist and retain what you are absorbing as you progress through the book. This is a textbook that is something of an all-star collection of information from a variety of scientific research textbooks.

This is one of the best books that I have read on any topic. The science of cancer is fascinating because it involves almost all aspects of cell biology. This book presents the subject in a clear, well-organized manner based on the experimental evidence. The author draws conclusions carefully always including possible alternative explanations so the reader senses the full complexity of the problem. He expresses a welcome skepticism about current cancer treatments and frankly discusses the controversies involved. The author has successfully organized a huge body of information in a way that makes it easy to read and understand.

It was only after I was in my 50’s that I discovered I had ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), a variation of ADD, Attention Deficit Disorder. Oh, I knew I was always doing something, and in my head I could be thinking of three things at the same time, but I could not fully understand why I had to strive so hard to be organized or why it was so easy for me to multitask as a manager/administrator.

Finally, I married someone whose child had been treated for ADD for 15 of her 20 years, and in learning about ADD, so I could be a better stepfather, I read too many books on the subject. I say I read "too many books" because I found myself starting to take a cynical approach towards the author before I was halfway through their book. Most proclaimed that "THEY HAD THE ANSWER" or "THEY GUARANTEED RESULTS," and in some limited instances, I am sure they did have an answer, but I found, as I discovered more children and adults diagnosed with ADD and ADHD, it cannot and, quite frankly, should not, be treated with a "cookie cutter" approach. Otherwise you’ll have everyone overmedicated with Ritalin or Adderrall, when maybe neither is needed.

Then, I came across Dr. Daniel Amen’s book HEALING ADD, the previous edition (yellow cover), and in it, Dr. Amen gave you a detailed description of how he developed the SPECT immaging process in diagnosing ADD. This new edition, which was published earlier this month, isn’t just an updating of a few references, as I have seen when other books come out with a revision.
I’ve owned Dr. Amen’s original version of "Healing ADD" since 2005 and it has been life-changing. After seeing his PBS special and learning there was an update to the original "Healing ADD," I had to have it – and I purchased it tonight at the bookstore. (I entered the bookstore with the intention to read the new additions and then order off of for the better price, but there were so many great new additions to the updated version, I went ahead and purchased it – and no, it wasn’t an ADD impulse buy! I thought it through, and decided I wanted to read it tonight and have it on-hand.)

I’m 35 and I’ve had ADD (Inattentive, Type 2) all my life – and didn’t realize it until I first read Dr. Amen’s first edition of this book in 2005, at the age of 26. I immediately found the best psychiatrist I could find in my area (via a recommendation of Dr. Amen’s clinic) and my life started to improve for the better very quickly. After a month of receiving treatment, I was in my first relationship (and I’m a good looking guy! I just could never follow through, and my brain simply wasn’t wired correctly to even fathom forging a relationship with a woman before I received treatment).

Here’s the thing though – for as much as my life instantly changed upon taking a stimulant medication after my initial diagnosis, having ADD is an on-going battle. I don’t mean to make it sound like it’s something terrible – as Dr. Amen points out, individuals with ADD have many strengths – we’re creative, spontaneous and fun.
Having read several of the author’s books and listened to some of his CDs, been to his clinic and watched some of his shows, I have some experience with them. While I have liked and benefited from the information Amen presents and recommend his materials, there are some problems which appear to be left hand, right hand disconnection and over commercialization of the overall effort. Here are some examples.

This December 2013 book in chapter 3 says you can take a type questionnaire at this web site […]- but upon going there the "page is no longer available". The all of chapter 5 "The Amen Clinics ADD Type Questionnaire" discusses it and refers one to a downloadable version supposedly at […]- same story, not available. This is inexcusable for a book that has not been on the street even 6 months.

Yes, there is an on line version of an ADD typing test, but its not the same as the book claims. It only covers 6 types and is not downloadable. The result is given on the page right after the last question, but is never reviewable again and there’s no Print provided for it. The book claims to "give targeted recommendations, including science-based natural ways to boost the brain" but the on line test does not give any recommendations – it proceeds to present a sales pitch for a big ADD program package.

Evidently, the sales arm of the clinics, the web programming and the author of the book are not on the same page. Or its a poorly executed bait and switch. Regardless, its not ethical to promise in a book to provide something that does not exist.

And this is only one example of a trend throughout his publications – an incomplete story in each.

This is well thought out, easy to use and the reproducable activities in the back of the book cover about every scenario you can think of – and some you didn’t. The sections to survey student, an important factor in helping students help themselves, is something frequently overlooked.

Without reading the whole book – I was using some of the materials within 10 minutes of opening the box. If you are teacher or parent of the disorganized you will find ways to help support your student in their education.

This is a very useful resource for working with parents, teachers and students. It helps to identify students’ STRENGTHS as well as weaknesses. When a student and I go through the questionnaire and then I say, "It looks like you are really good at…" the student is surprised and is much more accepting of, "And it looks like you could use some help with…" The book also offers specific ways to help students develop some of the skills in which they may be weaker. This is my favorite book for working with students who haven’t been very successful at school.

Entering the phrase "executive functioning" on Google resulted in 2,780,000 hits today. Any phrase with that many hits has to be included when addressing student difficulty in the classroom! The authors are very clear in stating that executive skills are not addressed in the traditional intelligence/achievement test batteries. This cluster of skills include planning/directing behavior, working memory, sustained attention, and goal-directed persistence to name only a few.

Dawson and Guare include chapters on the neurological working of the brain, methods of assessing executive functioning, linking assessment to intervention (both with individual students and with a class), coaching, implementing strategies within an RTI framework, and diagnosed populations. The chapter on transitions, either between classes or schools, is also very useful.

The concern in this book is on addressing symptoms/behaviors which may be interfering with a student’s success. While useful to a wide population of adults wishing to implement a positive change in a student, it must be remembered that behavioral checklists provide only one source of information for a very complex set of skills. The use of published, standardized behavior checklists are discussed as an adjunct to the material covered in this book.

This revised book will prove to be a very useful reference for those responsible for recommending and/or implementing strategies for struggling students.

Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time ridged
Author: Mark Adams ID: B0080JLQEC

Writer for the New York Times and GQ, Mark Adams is also the acclaimed author of Mr. America. In this fascinating travelogue, Adams follows in the controversial footsteps of Hiram Bingham III, who’s been both lionized and vilified for his discovery of the famed Lost City in 1911 – but which reputation is justified?

Mark Adams’ "Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time" is a book that’s a bit hard to classify. All at once, it’s a serious (and seriously funny) travelogue; a smart and tightly written history; and an investigative report into the greatest archaeological discovery of the last century.

Author Adams spent time writing and editing for the now defunct National Geographic Adventurer magazine and despite working with and alongside some of the world’s hardest core adventure travelers, he admits to not being much of one himself. He’d visited Machu Picchu with his son, but he’d done it the tourist way. He wanted to REdiscover Machu Picchu – the way its’ original discoverer, Hiram Bingham, had 100 years ago this July. He wanted to hike, climb, slog, tent and explore his way through the Vilcabamba region of Peru and finish at the site that was recently named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

Adams doesn’t camp and hadn’t been in a tent for years leading up to his Peruvian excursion. His preparation for the trip was extensive, including dressing the part of adventurer. "Have you ever seen Mr. Travel Guy? He’s the fellow who strides through international airports dressed like he’s flying off to hunt wildebeests – shirt with dozens of pockets, drip-dry pants that zip off into shorts, floppy hat with a cord pulled tight under the chin in case a twister blows through the baggage claim area. All of this describes exactly what I was wearing. I could have been trick-or-treating as Hemingway."

Make no mistake. Adams trip was an uncompromising adventure. There were no soft train rides, or helicopter drops into the jungle.
Back when Al Franken was a comedian and not a U.S. senator, he did a bit on "Saturday Night Live" in which he would describe some major event and end by asking, "how does this affect me, Al Franken?"

That, to me, is the stupid heart of the stunt memoir, those books in which the author undertakes a challenge outside his or her comfort zone, and then reports back on what it means to him. Such memoirs start with the assumption that the author is much more interesting than whatever they’re doing (usually false) and that just become something interesting happens to them makes them even more interesting (always false).

Thankfully, Mark Adams doesn’t participate in that nonsense. Although "Turn Right at Machu Picchu" starts with a similar elevator pitch ‘ "travel magazine copy editor gets out from behind his desk to explore Incan ruins in Peru" ‘ he comes back with a book that looks more outward than inward. Like a "Seinfeld" episode, there’s no learning and no hugging.

Adams uses three narrative threads to weave his story, starting with the Incans and their fatal encounters with the Spanish invaders during the 1500s. It’s not a pretty story, starting with the most commonly known story of Francisco Pizarro and Atahualpa, in which the Incan emperor promised a room full of gold in return for his freedom, an offer which Pizarro accepted and then reneged on by having Atahualpa strangled

Over the next three decades, subsequent Incan ruler moved between building new capitals in the jungle and raiding the Spanish. The Spanish responded with raids and various atrocities until, in 1572, they declared all-out war on the rebel Incan state. The empire dissolved when its last ruler, Tupac Amaru, was captured and executed.
